Classes

Currently, I am not holding any classes.  Classes will not be held unless there is a minimum of four students who have turned in their registration forms and payment.  If you are interested, email me at stitchinaddiction@gmail.com for a registration form, for additional information, or with any questions you may have.  The cost is $20/month per person.  This fee does not include the supplies.  Classes are open to children, as long as the child is ten-years-old or older.

See below for class descriptions, and the supply and project lists for the Beginner's Sewing Class.  Each class will last three months.

Class Descriptions

Beginner's Sewing

If you adore handmade items, but don't even know how to sew on a button, hem a pair of pants, run a sewing machine, or use a measuring tape, then this is the class for you!  In the first session, you learn to use your sewing machine, become familliar with it's stitches, and unravel the mysteries behind common sewing tools.  During the remainder of the three months, you will choose three to five projects from the project list and complete them.  Through these projects you will learn:
  • how to use a pattern
  • how to measure for a proper fit
  • how to sew and finish seams
  • how to create a casing
  • how to hem
  • simple mending: hemming pants, replacing buttons, etc.
  • how to gather
  • how to insert a zipper
You will also have the option of learning beginner's quilting by creating a rag quilt or a quilted potholders or simple knitting by knitting your first scarf.

Intermediate Sewing

Once you have mastered the basics through Beginner's Sewing, or if you are already familliar with the basics and would like to learn some more, you move into Intermediate Sewing.  Once again, the class will take three months and you will be allowed to choose from a project list.  During the three months, you will complete up to three of those projects.  Through these projects, you will learn:
  • how to set a sleeve
  • how to make buttonholes
  • how to add a collar
  • how to line a bodice, skirt, etc.
  • how to add trims, etc to "make" a dress, blouse, etc, unique
  • how to make your own bias tape
  • how to make simple adjustments to a pattern
  • how to make your sewing process simple and easy through easy techniques
You will also have the option of advancing in quilting if you choose to make the baby quilt.

Advanced Sewing

Ready for the next level?  Frustrated with your sewing because nothing fits correctly?  Stuck on a project because you don't know how to complete the next step?  Then Advanced Sewing is for you!  In the same format as the previous classes, you will choose up to three projects to complete during the three months.  You will learn:
  • how to adjust a pattern to fit "real" body shapes
  • what size pattern to buy and cut
  • how to combine two or more patterns to design your own look
  • how to fit and sew with princess seams and darts in dresses, suits, blouses, and more
  • how to sew knit fabrics
  • anything else you would like to know (and I can teach! :-)
You may choose to advance in quilting at this level, by choosing a lap, twin, or full size quilt as one of your projects, as well.

Project and Supply Lists

Items you always need to bring:

Sewing machine
Thread for your project
Sewing measuring tape
Pins and pin cushion (my absolute favorites are the glass head pins and a magnetic pin cushion)
Hem gauge
Sewing scissors (I have two pairs - one large pair with the spring handle which saves your hand when cutting - and a small pair with a 2-3" blade for snipping threads, etc as I sew)
Seam ripper
Needles

Beginner's Sewing

You must choose at least one Level One project, one Level Two project, and one Level Three project for this class.  (The level is noted as a number beside the project.)  If there is something that you would like to create, but it is not on the project list, please ask me and I will try to help you, if at all possible!
